I saw the new John Denver Tribute Show on 13 March and was immediately reminded why this show was an award winner in 2007. Quality. James Garrett is unsurpassed when it comes to recreating the authentic sound and atmosphere of sitting with John Denver in a relaxed personal setting at his home as well as in a concert packed with fans. James shares his personal experiences with John Denver throughout the show. He provides answers to the questions you and I would have asked had we ever had the opportunity to visit the man in person.
My wife and I have seen this show several times since it opened last year and each time I learn a little more about John Denver. Each show is a little different. In order to maintain the relaxed atmosphere James stays away from a scripted routine and spends more time interacting with the audience. At the beginning of the second half he opens the floor to requests. Denver wrote 146 songs and James does a good job of making sure the audience gets to hear their favorite songs.
On 13 March, Jim Glaspy filled in for Rick Quincy who was on a cruise. Jim is a world-class bluegrass singer and musician. James and Randy Plummer amazed me when they joined Jim Glaspy singing bluegrass harmony. The sound they created wasn’t just someone singing along in harmony; it was a perfect blend as if they had been singing together all their lives. In addition to the bluegrass segments, James also features Branson legend, Randy Plummer singing Hank Williams and gospel songs. Kasi Means and C.J. Newsom are also featured solo as well as provide background vocals during the show. C.J even gets in some yodeling this year. I had no idea she could do that.
Everyone is on their feet by the end of the show for James’ performance of, “Calypso.” You just can’t stay seated with all the energy in that song. And then with everyone on their feet and calling for more, James keeps up the pace with, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.”
James also announced his new show coming up called, “Strait Country.” This show will feature the songs of George Strait and other country stars. Jim Glaspy and Randy Plummer will join James as regulars on this show at 5:00PM, on the same stage at the Little Opry Theater.
